In 1975, Cyril formed his first group, The Sandwich Isle Band, Brian Hussey on vocals, acoustic and electric bass; Steve Hall on vocals, guitar, ukulele and electric bass; Cyril Pahinui on vocals, slack-key and 12 string guitars, and electric bass; and Eddie Palama on steel guitar. One of the first of the “next generation” Hawaiian music groups they premiered Hawaiian music at the Honolulu Icon, Blaisdell Hotel. The Band continued their weekend performances through 1977 when Jorgen Skov and Peter Birbaum of SBS Corp. bought the hotel’s long-term lease and renovations began.
Releasing an album under Seabird Productions/Seabird Sound was their chance to reach a much bigger audience. So in 1978, with kokua from Peter Moon on ukulele and slack-key guitar and Merv Ching on percussion courtesy of Panini Records Inc. The Sandwich Isle Band went in to the studio to record their innovative sound.
To commemorate his preeminent career and being honored with the Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award, a Limited Edition of the The Sandwich Isle Band will be reissued in a CD format including complete original liner notes and graphics.
